The theme for Black History Month was ‘Reclaiming Narratives’, and its main aim is to recognise and correct the narratives of Black history and culture. This theme underscores a commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage. It’s about taking control of stories and honouring heroes while challenging the narratives that have often overlooked the contributions and achievements of Black individuals both in the UK and globally.
Pupils here at school are always keen to participate in Black History Month and they covered topics with great enthusiasm this year:
- Nursery – We are all different.
- Reception – Celebrating our differences.
- Year 1 – Heroes of Service: Honouring contributions in the Armed Forces.
- Year 2 – Heroes of Sport – Arthur Wharton, Marcus Rashford, Jessica Ennis.
- Year 3 – Innovators and Inventors: Reclaiming Contributions to Science and Technology.
- Year 4 – Reclaiming Literary Narratives: Celebrating Black Voices in Literature – Benjamin Zepaniah, Malorie Blackman, David Olusoga.
- Year 5 – Voices of Politics – Diane Abbott, Paul Boateng, Bernie Grant.
- Year 6 – Voices of Activism: Reclaiming Black Narratives in Social Justice – Bristol Bus Boycott, Jessica Huntley.
The children are very proud of the work that they have produced and which is on display in school.
