World Book Day and Reading Cafes

The National Year of Reading 2026 is a major UK-wide initiative designed to tackle the decline in reading for pleasure and help people of all ages – especially primary school children – reconnect with reading.

Our Reading Tree in our school entrance has been very popular with children loving the opportunity to take home extra books and donate books that they no longer use for others to enjoy.

Throughout the Spring Term, every class held a Reading Cafe in the school hall where family members came in to enjoy reading variety of books, have a snack and a drink and even enjoy a bit of Book Bingo! Staff also shared a little bit about the texts that children are reading in school. It was great to see these events being so well attended.

Our school also had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day. Children arrived in wonderful costumes inspired by their favourite book characters, filling the school with colour, creativity and excitement. Throughout the day, classes shared stories and spent time reading for pleasure, enjoying a wide range of books together. It was a brilliant way for the whole school to celebrate the joy of reading.
