To start the school year in style, a group of excited Year 6 pupils embarked on a journey to Alton Castle in Stafford for three days of retreat, reflection and adventure.
Children (and adults) were extremely lucky to spend two nights and three fun-filled days of exploration, meditation, reflection and prayer.
The adventure began with a day out at Alton Towers – well they might as well, it is literally next door! Pupils then journeyed to the Castle and got started with further adventures. During their stay, they had the opportunity to take part in many fascinating activities – some taking them out of their comfort zone! They included using the climbing wall, archery, a low ropes course, trekking and biking.
The retreat gave pupils the chance to spend some time reflecting on their faith and beliefs, particularly focussing on the concept of being disciples of Christ on a pilgrimage during this Jubilee year. Each night, before bedtime, children split into groups and had evening prayer sessions in different rooms of the castle, lighting candles and taking time out from the day’s busy activities, to remember the important things in life. The stay drew to a close with a beautiful mass in their historic church, followed by a disco and party games.
Thank you to all the staff at Alton Castle for making us feel very welcome and for providing us with a fantastic, memorable experience. Thank you also to the school staff who gave up their time to give the children such a wonderful time.
